Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu sharply condemned French President Emmanuel Macron’s proposal for an arms embargo on Israel, calling it a “disgrace.” Netanyahu asserted that Israel is fighting a multi-front war against armed groups backed by Iran.
In a video statement on Saturday, Netanyahu stated, “As Israel fights the forces of barbarism led by Iran, all civilized countries should be standing firmly by Israel’s side. Yet President Macron and other Western leaders are now calling for arms embargoes against Israel. Shame on them.”
He highlighted Israel’s battles on multiple fronts, including against Hamas in Gaza, Hezbollah in Lebanon, the Houthis in Yemen, Shiite militias in Iraq and Syria, and terrorists in the West Bank. Netanyahu asked whether Iran had restricted weapons deliveries to its allies, stating, “Of course not.”
Despite international pressure, Netanyahu remained defiant, saying, “Israel will win with or without their support. But their shame will continue long after the war is won.”
Earlier, Macron suggested in an interview that arms shipments to Israel used in the Gaza conflict should be suspended to facilitate a political solution. “I think we are not being heard,” Macron said. “It is a mistake, including for the security of Israel.”
He emphasized the need to avoid escalation in Lebanon while Israel was attacking Hezbollah targets in Beirut. Following Netanyahu’s strong rebuttal, Macron’s office described France as a “steadfast friend of Israel,” terming Netanyahu’s remarks as “excessive and detached from the friendship” between the two nations.
Qatar praised Macron’s statement, while Jordan called for a “complete ban on the export of weapons to Israel.”
