In a significant political shift, sources reveal that the National Conference (NC) and Congress are likely to forge an alliance for the upcoming Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections. The two parties are currently engaged in seat-sharing negotiations.
A late-night meeting in Srinagar saw leaders from both parties discuss the details of the potential alliance. Congress has proposed to contest 12 seats in the Kashmir Valley, while offering 12 seats to the NC in the Jammu division. However, final decisions on seat distribution are still pending, with further talks scheduled to finalize the agreement within the next few days.
This anticipated alliance could dramatically reshape the political scene in Jammu and Kashmir. With the Election Commission of India (ECI) announcing the Assembly polls after a six-year hiatus, political activity in the region is intensifying. The last major political event was the Lok Sabha elections, but the forthcoming Assembly elections are expected to stir significant developments.
The Jammu and Kashmir Assembly polls, set for September 18, September 25, and October 1, will be historic. These elections follow major changes in the region, including the abrogation of Article 370 on August 5, 2019, which led to the state’s reorganization into a Union Territory (UT) and the formation of Ladakh as a separate UT without a legislature. The previous Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir were held in 2014. The results for the current polls will be announced on October 4.
