Nasa Identifies Source of Mysterious Sound from Starliner
Nasa has clarified the origin of the mysterious “sonar-like” noises reported by astronaut Butch Wilmore aboard the International Space Station (ISS). The sounds, which had sparked widespread speculation and concern over the weekend, were traced to an audio feedback issue.
The pulsing noises emanated from a speaker in Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft. Nasa’s Commercial Crew Program explained that the unusual sounds resulted from a configuration problem between the ISS and the Starliner. The complex nature of the ISS audio system, which integrates multiple spacecraft and modules, often leads to such occurrences.
Nasa emphasized that noise and feedback are common due to the interconnected nature of the space station’s audio system. Astronauts are routinely instructed to report any unusual sounds to mission control, which is part of standard operating procedures.
Importantly, Nasa assured that the speaker feedback reported by Wilmore does not pose a technical threat to the crew, the Starliner spacecraft, or station operations. This includes the upcoming uncrewed undocking of Starliner from the ISS, scheduled for no earlier than Friday, September 6.
The incident initially raised concerns due to Starliner’s troubled history, including technical issues that extended astronauts Wilmore and Sunita Williams’s stay aboard the ISS to nearly three months, instead of the planned eight-day mission. However, Nasa’s prompt explanation has alleviated fears of new complications.
As Starliner prepares for its uncrewed return to Earth, Nasa continues to monitor all aspects of the mission closely. With the source of the strange noises identified and resolved, focus now shifts to Starliner’s upcoming departure from the ISS and its critical return flight to Earth.
