In the wake of a planned student protest march demanding Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s resignation, Nabanna, the West Bengal secretariat, has been transformed into a fortress. The protest, triggered by public outrage over the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, has led to the deployment of over 6,000 Kolkata Police personnel. The protest march, organized by Paschimbanga Chhatra Samaj under the banner of ‘Nabanna Abhijan,’ has seen extensive security measures, including three-layered barricades and heavy police presence across strategic locations.
The protestors, led by students from various universities, have called for justice for the victim, demanding capital punishment for the culprit and the resignation of Mamata Banerjee, who, besides being the Chief Minister, also oversees the state police and health departments. The students claim to be apolitical, yet their movement has garnered significant attention from various political parties, including the Trinamool Congress and BJP, who have clashed over the handling of the protest.
The Kolkata Police have sought details from the organizers about the number of participants and the planned routes but have yet to receive any response. Intelligence reports suggest that two major rallies will begin from College Square in Kolkata and Santragachi in Howrah, converging on Nabanna.
With the protest scheduled to start at 1 pm, the police have issued traffic advisories for multiple areas in Kolkata and Howrah, warning of significant disruptions. Key roads, including Vidyasagar Setu and Howrah Bridge, are expected to be heavily impacted, with traffic diversions in place to manage the anticipated crowd.
The rally has sparked significant political controversy, with Trinamool Congress accusing BJP of inciting violence, an allegation the BJP has denied, stating that while they support the cause, they are not directly involved in organizing the protest. The CPI-M has also distanced itself from the march, labeling it as an RSS-backed movement.
As the situation unfolds, the city remains tense, with the potential for escalated confrontations between protestors and security forces. The ongoing demands for justice and the political ramifications of this protest continue to dominate discussions across West Bengal.
