In response to the growing outrage over the horrific rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, a student organization planned a large protest march towards Nabanna, the West Bengal Secretariat, demanding Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s resignation. In preparation for the “Nabanna Abhijan,” security has been significantly increased across Kolkata and Howrah, with more than 6,000 police personnel deployed.
Security Measures in Place
The area surrounding Nabanna has transformed into a fortress, with Kolkata Police and Howrah City Police erecting a three-layered security barricade at 19 key points. Additional forces from various districts have been brought in to maintain law and order. Heavy Radio Flying Squads (HRFS), Rapid Action Force (RAF), Quick Reaction Teams (QRTs), drones, and water cannons are also on standby.
The protest march is organized by the Paschimbanga Chhatra Samaj, an apolitical student group. However, Kolkata Police declared the march “illegal,” citing intelligence reports of potential chaos, violence, and conspiracies against police personnel. The police have been attempting to gather details from the march organizers but have not received any response so far.
The Rally and Organizers
The rally is being led by Prabir Das, an MA student from Rabindra Bharati University, along with Subhankar Halder of Kalyani University and Sayan Lahiri from Rabindra Mukta University. The students demand justice for the victim, capital punishment for the accused, and the resignation of Mamata Banerjee, who is also the health minister.
Interestingly, junior doctors leading the movement for justice have distanced themselves from this protest, planning a separate rally in Central Kolkata on Wednesday. The Nabanna march is expected to start from two locations—College Square in Kolkata and Santragachi in Howrah—covering distances of 10 kilometers and 3 kilometers respectively.
Political Reactions
The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has accused the BJP of orchestrating the protest to incite violence. TMC leaders showed videos at a press conference, claiming that BJP leaders wanted the police to fire at protesters. On the other hand, the BJP refuted these claims, asserting that while they support the protest against the government’s failure, they are not behind its organization. Meanwhile, CPI-M has decided not to participate in the rally, labeling it as an “RSS-backed” event.
Traffic Restrictions
Given the scale of the planned protest, traffic movement is expected to be severely affected across major roads and intersections in Kolkata and Howrah. The police have issued guidelines for motorists, warning of potential diversions and roadblocks on Tuesday.
Background of the Rape-Murder Case
The protest stems from the tragic incident on August 9, when the body of a second-year postgraduate student was found in the seminar hall of RG Kar hospital. The post-mortem confirmed that the victim had been raped and murdered. Sanjoy Roy, a civil volunteer with Kolkata Police, was arrested in connection with the crime and is currently in judicial custody.
Protests have erupted across Kolkata, with demands for strict laws to prevent such heinous crimes in the future. The Kolkata Police have extended prohibitory orders near RG Kar Medical College until August 31 to maintain peace and order.
