A recent protest in Kolkata has taken a new turn as a saffron-clad sadhu with a tricolor in hand stood defiantly against Mamata Banerjee’s water cannons. The incident quickly became an emblem of resistance against the current administration, capturing the attention of people nationwide.
The sadhu, initially identifying himself as Balaram Bose, said he was motivated by the desire for justice in the RG Kar rape-murder case. However, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) has countered, claiming the sadhu is actually a BJP member named Prabir Bose. This allegation has only intensified the mystery surrounding the sadhu.
On August 27, during the “Nabanna Abhijan” protest, over 6,000 security personnel formed a three-layer defense around the West Bengal Government Secretariat. Barricades were erected, and water cannons were set up to control the massive crowd demanding justice for the rape-murder victim and calling for Mamata Banerjee’s resignation.
As the protest turned violent, with protesters clashing with the police and tearing down barricades, the image of the sadhu braving the water cannons emerged as a symbol of defiance. Smriti Irani, a former Union Minister, shared the video of the sadhu, praising the people’s stand against tyranny.
In an interview, Balaram Bose stated that his participation in the protest was driven by a desire to voice concerns about women’s safety and justice for the 31-year-old trainee doctor of RG Kar Medical College. He emphasized his non-political stance and claimed inspiration from his guru, Aurobindo Ghosh.
Despite the allegations from TMC, Bose denied any political affiliation and stressed the need for a united stand against injustice. However, TMC officials, including Rajya Sabha MP Sagarika Ghose, alleged the sadhu to be a BJP member, sharing posts and profiles as supposed evidence of his affiliation.
As the debate continues, the true identity of the sadhu remains uncertain, leaving a sense of intrigue around his role in the protest.
