MS Dhoni might get the chance to play as an ‘uncapped player’ in IPL 2025. The BCCI announced the retention and auction rules for IPL 2025, reviving the ‘uncapped player’ rule that existed from 2008 to 2020. This rule will benefit not only CSK but also other teams.
An uncapped player is one who has not played international cricket in the last five years or does not have a central contract. An uncapped player can be bought for ₹4 lakh, while retaining a capped player costs a minimum of ₹11 crore. The BCCI confirmed that a team can retain a maximum of six players.
Dhoni led the Super Kings to victory in IPL 2023 but handed over the captaincy to Ruturaj Gaikwad in 2024. He has not given clear indications about his future but has stated that his decision will depend on the auction rules.
Fans on social media have quickly linked the return of the uncapped player rule to Dhoni’s increased probability of playing in the next IPL season. Former India opener Aakash Chopra indicated that the rule will benefit not just CSK but franchises like the Mumbai Indians and Gujarat Titans.
Chopra said, “If you have to retain five players, you will have to spend ₹75 crore. If you want to retain six players, it will cost you ₹79 crore. After that, your purse will become smaller.”
This highlights that all teams wanted this rule. It remains to be seen whether MS Dhoni will play in the IPL next season or not.
