Pakistan has confirmed its first cases of mpox in 2024, with three patients testing positive after recently returning from the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The health department in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province verified the cases, raising concerns about the spread of the virus.
Mpox, a viral infection that transmits primarily through close contact, has been declared a global public health emergency by the World Health Organisation (WHO). The outbreak, initially detected in the Democratic Republic of Congo, has since spread to multiple countries, including Pakistan.
First Cases of 2024 in Pakistan
According to health authorities, the three patients arrived in Pakistan from the UAE and were diagnosed shortly after. The specific variant of the virus detected in these cases is yet to be confirmed.
This development comes shortly after Sweden reported its first case of the more severe Clade I variant of the mpox virus. Jakob Forssmed, Sweden’s Minister of Health and Social Affairs, confirmed the case, emphasizing the gravity of this strain, known for its more severe symptoms.
Global Health Concern
Mpox is generally considered a mild infection, but in rare instances, it can lead to severe health complications and even death. The virus presents flu-like symptoms and characteristic pus-filled lesions on the skin.
The current global concern is fueled by the emergence of a new variant, Clade Ib, which has been spreading more easily through close contact, including sexual transmission. This variant has already been reported in several African countries, including Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, and Uganda, prompting the WHO to issue emergency alerts.
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus expressed deep concern over the rapid spread of this new clade. “The detection and rapid spread of a new clade of mpox in the eastern DRC, its spread to neighboring countries that had not previously reported mpox, and the potential for further transmission within Africa and beyond are deeply concerning,” he stated.
Conclusion
As the situation unfolds, Pakistan’s health authorities are on high alert, monitoring the spread of the virus and implementing measures to contain further transmission. The global health community is closely watching these developments, especially as new variants continue to emerge, potentially complicating efforts to control the virus.
