Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during a public event in Maharashtra’s Jalgaon, delivered a strong message addressing the rising crimes against women in India. He assured the nation that his government is committed to ensuring that those who commit crimes against women will not go unpunished.
The PM’s statement comes in response to nationwide outrage over recent cases like the horrific rape and murder of a doctor in Kolkata, the Badlapur school sex abuse incident, and the Assam gangrape. Modi emphasized the government’s efforts to strengthen the legal framework by introducing amendments and new laws aimed at enhancing women’s safety and justice.
“We are strengthening and making stricter laws for criminals who commit sins against women,” PM Modi declared, highlighting initiatives such as the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which allows victims to file e-FIRs without visiting a police station.
In addition to these measures, the Modi government has introduced specific amendments to address crimes against women within marriages. PM Modi assured that the central government is working in close cooperation with state governments to combat these issues effectively.
Highlighting the government’s dedication to women’s welfare, Modi challenged critics to compare the last ten years of his administration with the previous seven decades, asserting that no government has done as much for women since India’s independence.
During the event, PM Modi interacted with ‘Lakhpati Didis,’ women who have achieved significant economic milestones through self-help groups. He felicitated 11 lakh new Lakhpati Didis and distributed loans amounting to Rs 5,000 crore, benefitting 25.8 lakh women from 2.35 lakh self-help groups. The government aims to expand this initiative to include 3 crore women.
PM Modi praised the efforts of the Eknath Shinde-led Mahayuti government in Maharashtra for its focus on women’s empowerment and economic growth, underscoring that a government committed to development will continue to prioritize the safety and progress of women.
