Migrant Lynched in Haryana Over Beef Suspicion, Seven Arrested
A migrant worker from West Bengal, Sabir Malik, was allegedly lynched by members of a cow vigilante group in Haryana’s Charkhi Dadri district. The attack was sparked by suspicion that Malik had consumed beef. Police have arrested seven individuals, including two minors, in connection with the incident on August 27.
The accused lured Malik to a shop under the guise of selling empty plastic bottles, where they began to beat him. When locals intervened, the attackers moved Malik to another location and continued the assault, leading to his death. Malik lived in a shanty near Bandhra village and earned his living by collecting waste and bottles.
Authorities have registered a case under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) against the suspects. “A migrant laborer was beaten to death by some people. A case has been registered under BNS, and seven people, including two juveniles, have been arrested. The accused are currently on police remand and are being questioned,” said DSP Dheeraj Kumar.
Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini condemned the incident, stating that while cows are highly respected in the state, mob lynching is unacceptable. “Such incidents of lynching are unfortunate and should not happen,” he added.
Over the past decade, Haryana has witnessed a rise in mob violence by cow vigilante groups. In 2023, two Muslim men from Rajasthan were abducted and burnt to death in Haryana’s Bhiwani district, triggering national outrage. Following these murders, Monu Manesar, the head of a local Bajrang Dal cow vigilante group, and 20 others were booked.
