The Importance of Pleasing Ancestors
Pitru Paksha is considered highly important in Hindu tradition. This is the time when our ancestors come to earth to bless us. In 2024, Pitru Paksha will begin on 17th September and conclude on 2nd October. During this period, offerings like Shraddh, Pinddaan, and Jalaanajali are performed to satisfy the souls of the departed. It is believed that chanting specific mantras during these rituals is essential to ensure that ancestors accept the offerings and bless us. Let’s explore which mantras should be chanted during Shraddh rituals.
Mantras to Please Ancestors
While offering Tarpan or Pinddaan for ancestors, chant the mantra ‘Om Pitra Devataye Namah.’ Another powerful mantra is ‘Om Agacchantu Me Pitar Evam Grahantu Jalanjalim,’ which is believed to call upon the ancestors to accept the offerings of food and water.
Mantra for Father and Mother’s Offering
Separate mantras are recited for the offerings to one’s father and mother. For the mother, the mantra goes: ‘Gotre Asmanmata Devi Vasurupast Tripyatam Idam Tilodakam Ganga Jalam Va Tasmai Swadha Namah.’ For the father, the mantra is: ‘Gotre Asmatpita Sharma Vasurupat Tripyatam Idam Tilodakam Ganga Jalam Va Tasmai Swadha Namah.’
Mantras for Grandfather and Grandmother
Similarly, for the grandfather and grandmother, specific mantras are chanted using the family gotra and their names. For example, for the grandfather, the mantra is: ‘Gotre Asmatpitamah Vasurupat Tripyatam Idam Tilodakam.’ A similar mantra is chanted for the grandmother.
Pitru Gayatri Mantra and Kavach Path
If one is unable to recite other mantras, the Pitru Gayatri Mantra is a simple yet effective way to appease the ancestors and receive their blessings. Additionally, chanting the Pitru Kavach Path helps in removing Pitru Dosha.
