Manipur Violence: 5 Killed, Militant Bunkers Destroyed in Jiribam and Churachandpur

Fresh violence erupted in Manipur, leading to the deaths of five individuals and the destruction of militant bunkers by security forces in Jiribam and Churachandpur districts. The violence unfolded as two warring communities clashed, resulting in a high-tension situation in the region.

On Saturday, a tragic incident occurred in Jiribam district where one person was shot dead while sleeping at his isolated home, located about 5 km from the district administration headquarters. Following this, an intense gunfight broke out between the warring communities in a nearby hilly area, leading to the deaths of four more individuals, including three militants.

Earlier this week, suspected village volunteers burned down an abandoned three-room house of a retired police officer, further escalating tensions in the region. Despite efforts to restore peace, such as a recent agreement reached between representatives of Meitei and Hmar communities to prevent further violence, the district continues to witness conflict.

Meanwhile, in Churachandpur district, security forces destroyed three bunkers belonging to militants who had launched rocket attacks in Bishnupur. These attacks resulted in the death of one civilian and injuries to six others. The militants deployed long-range rockets among civilians, which has heightened the security threat in the area.

Authorities have intensified security measures, deploying military helicopters for aerial patrolling and conducting high-level meetings to assess the law and order situation. Security forces are on high alert and are closely monitoring the region to prevent any further escalation.

Manipur has been plagued by ethnic violence since May last year, which has resulted in over 200 deaths and left thousands homeless. The ongoing conflict between Imphal Valley-based Meiteis and hills-based Kuki-Zo groups continues to disrupt lives and create a volatile environment in the state.
