Manipur Violence Escalates: Rocket Attacks and Drone Use Intensify Crisis

Manipur has been engulfed in a fresh wave of violence, marked by escalating rocket attacks and drone use. Recent incidents have left at least five dead, sparking panic and fear across the state. This surge in violence has pushed the state to deploy anti-drone systems and increase security measures in the affected areas.

Rocket Attacks and Fatal Shootings in Jiribam

In a tragic turn of events, five people were killed in the Jiribam district of Manipur. The violence erupted when suspected Kuki insurgents attacked Nungchappi village, located 230 km from Imphal. The attack led to the death of one individual who was shot in his sleep, while four others were killed in a subsequent exchange of fire between two warring communities. The incident highlighted the ongoing ethnic tensions between Meitei and Kuki groups, exacerbated by recent drone sightings and bombings.

Deadly Rocket Attacks in Bishnupur

Earlier in the day, rocket attacks rocked the Bishnupur district, killing one person and injuring five others. The first attack occurred at 4:30 am at Tronglaobi, damaging two structures. Another missile landed near the residence of former Chief Minister Mairembam Koireng, killing an elderly man and injuring five, including a 13-year-old girl.

Anti-Drone Systems Deployed

In response to the escalating violence, Manipur Police have deployed anti-drone systems across the region. Police teams and additional security forces have been sent to conduct combing operations in the adjoining hill ranges, with aerial patrolling by military helicopters also underway. Reports of multiple drones sighted in areas like Narainsena and Nambol Kamong have further heightened tensions.

Chief Minister Calls Emergency Meeting

In light of the ongoing violence, Chief Minister N Biren Singh called an emergency meeting with leaders from the ruling coalition, including BJP and NPP MLAs. Discussions focused on addressing the violence and implementing measures to restore peace in the state. The Chief Minister also met Governor Lakshman Acharya to discuss the situation.

COCOMI Issues Ultimatum to Armed Forces

The Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) has issued a five-day ultimatum to the Indian Armed Forces, demanding decisive action to resolve the crisis. The committee has accused the Assam Rifles of complicity in the unrest and called for a crackdown on militant groups or the withdrawal of central forces from Manipur.

Human Chains Formed in Protest

In a show of solidarity, thousands of residents formed human chains across five districts of Imphal Valley. Organized by COCOMI, the protest saw participation from students and women who lined the roads with placards condemning the violence and drone attacks. The rally sent a strong message against the ongoing conflict and demanded immediate action from the government.

The renewed violence, characterized by drone usage and rocket attacks, has intensified the ethnic conflict in Manipur, leaving the state on the brink of a larger crisis.
