West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s call for the public to focus on Durga Puja festivities instead of protesting the rape and murder of a Kolkata doctor has sparked outrage. The statement came as protests demanding justice for the trainee doctor have continued for over a month across West Bengal.
The grieving mother of the victim criticized Banerjee’s remarks as “insensitive.” She stated, “We used to celebrate Durga Puja with our daughter, but now there will be no celebrations for us. Would she have said the same if it happened to her family?”
The victim’s mother accused Banerjee of trying to suppress the public’s demand for justice. “The light in my house has been extinguished forever. They throttled my daughter and now they are trying to throttle the demand for justice.”
Banerjee had appealed to the public during a meeting at the state secretariat, saying, “I request you to return to festivities and let the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) complete the investigation.” She claimed that the protests were causing disruptions and urged for calm.
Banerjee denied allegations of offering money to the victim’s family, calling such claims “slanderous lies” and part of a conspiracy by the Centre and Left parties. She challenged her critics, saying, “I never mentioned offering money. This is an attempt to malign our government.”
The Chief Minister also revealed that Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal had offered to resign multiple times due to the rape-murder case, but was persuaded to stay on considering the upcoming Durga Puja.
BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari criticized Banerjee’s “return to festivities” remark, accusing her of treating the public like puppets. He also shared videos on social media showing Mamata Banerjee’s contradictory statements regarding compensation to the victim’s family.
This incident has intensified the ongoing political battle in West Bengal, with both sides fiercely defending their actions amid the public’s call for justice.
