Mamata Banerjee Promises Severe Action in Doctor’s Murder
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has pledged severe punishment for the accused in the shocking murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The Chief Minister announced that the case will be expedited through a fast-track court and that the accused could face the death penalty if necessary.
The victim, a 31-year-old post-graduate trainee doctor, was discovered dead inside a seminar hall at the state-run hospital on Friday. This tragic event triggered widespread protests among junior doctors, who demanded justice for their colleague.
Describing the incident as “unfortunate” and “despicable,” Banerjee expressed her personal anguish and confirmed that the accused was affiliated with the hospital. She assured the victim’s family that strict action would be taken. “The incident feels like a personal loss to me. The doctors’ anger and demand for justice are justified, and I fully support them,” Banerjee said.
The Chief Minister emphasized that the case would be fast-tracked and stated, “If needed, the accused will be hanged. However, they should receive the strictest punishment possible.” She urged those protesting to continue their demonstrations but also fulfill their duties in treating patients.
Banerjee also addressed concerns about the state administration’s credibility, stating, “If protestors feel they lack faith in the state administration, they can approach other law enforcement agencies. We are committed to a thorough investigation and stringent punishment for the culprits.”
In addition, Banerjee assured that any potential negligence by hospital staff would be thoroughly investigated. She remains in close contact with the police, who have launched a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the murder.
The autopsy report revealed brutal details, including severe injuries and evidence of sexual assault. According to police, the incident occurred between 3 and 6 am. The arrested suspect, an outsider with suspicious activities, had access to multiple hospital departments. The SIT is currently reviewing CCTV footage to gather more evidence.
Banerjee has stated there are no objections to a central agency probe if demanded by the victim’s family. She remains committed to ensuring that justice is served with exemplary punishment for the accused.
