West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has denied allegations from the BJP that she threatened junior doctors who are protesting the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at a Kolkata medical college. The Chief Minister labeled the allegations as “completely false” and part of a “malicious disinformation campaign.” Banerjee asserted that the doctors’ movement is genuine and that she supports their cause.
During a rally of the Trinamool’s students’ wing on Wednesday, Banerjee appealed to the junior doctors at state-run hospitals, who have been on ceasework for 21 days, to return to work. She emphasized that she does not intend to file FIRs against the striking doctors, considering their future careers. However, BJP leaders accused Banerjee of threatening the doctors, who are demanding justice for the rape and murder of a woman medic at RG Kar Medical College, as well as improved working conditions.
In a post on X, Banerjee reiterated her support for the doctors and emphasized that she had “not uttered a single word against” them. She accused the BJP, backed by the central government, of “threatening democracy” in West Bengal and attempting to create “anarchy” and “lawlessness.”
Banerjee also clarified her earlier statement, explaining that a phrase she used was a quote from Sri Ramakrishna Paramahansa Deva, highlighting the importance of raising one’s voice against crimes. She further stressed that her government maintains a zero-tolerance policy for incidents of rape and plans to amend existing laws to ensure capital punishment for convicted rapists.
