West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has announced a new law that ensures the death penalty for rapists, taking a firm stance against crimes against women. Speaking at the foundation day event of Trinamool Chhatra Parishad, she declared that the state government will introduce a bill next week to amend existing laws and demand capital punishment for rapists.
The announcement comes in the wake of the Kolkata rape and murder case, where a 31-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor was brutally raped and murdered at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College on August 9. Mamata Banerjee emphasized that the state would push for swift justice, stating, “We will pass a bill on anti-rape laws that would secure capital punishment for the rapist within seven days of the crime.”
She criticized the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for its “Bengal Bandh” protest, accusing the party of exploiting the situation for political gain rather than seeking justice for the victim. “The saffron party doesn’t want justice, they are only trying to defame Bengal,” she remarked.
Mamata Banerjee also called for widespread protests, urging all blocs to demonstrate on August 31, and a special protest led by women on September 1, demanding the death penalty for the accused and changes in the law. She will also hold a “dharna” on Saturday to press for these demands.
Responding to the BJP’s call for her resignation, Mamata Banerjee countered by questioning why chief ministers from other states with similar crimes have not resigned. She also criticized the slow progress of the CBI’s investigation into the case, pointing out that it has been 16 days without substantial results.
The proposed law aims to provide justice swiftly and deter crimes against women by imposing the most severe punishment.
