West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has sharply criticized political parties for what she describes as “indulging in cheap politics” following the tragic rape and murder of a trainee doctor at a Kolkata hospital. The incident has sparked a political firestorm, with Banerjee accusing opposition parties of exploiting the situation for political gain.
Mamata Banerjee’s Response to the Incident
Mamata Banerjee expressed her deep concern over the incident, stating that she had been actively involved in monitoring the case from the moment it came to light. She revealed that she had been in constant communication with the Kolkata Police Commissioner and the victim’s family, ensuring that swift action was taken against the perpetrator. “As soon as I learned of the crime, I spoke to the police commissioner and the victim’s parents,” Banerjee said, emphasizing the immediate measures taken by her government.
Condemnation of Opposition’s Actions
The West Bengal Chief Minister did not hold back in her criticism of the opposition parties, particularly CPI(M) and BJP, accusing them of trying to exploit the tragedy for their political agenda. “Instead of standing with the victim’s family, they are indulging in cheap politics,” Banerjee remarked. She drew parallels with the political climate in Bangladesh, suggesting that the opposition was attempting to create a similar atmosphere in West Bengal. “They think they can do a Bangladesh here. But let me tell you, I am not greedy for power,” she asserted.
Commitment to Justice
Banerjee reassured the public and the victim’s family that justice would be served swiftly. “I have told the parents that the rapist will be hanged, and I stand by my words,” she said. Highlighting the prompt action taken by the police, Banerjee noted that the accused was arrested within 12 hours of the incident. She also mentioned that the police had provided security to the victim’s family until the cremation was completed.
Political Fallout
The incident has further intensified the political rivalry in West Bengal, with the opposition parties criticizing the state government’s handling of law and order. However, Banerjee remains resolute in her stance, defending her administration’s actions and condemning the politicization of such a heinous crime.
The case has not only shocked the state but also reignited the debate over women’s safety and the role of political parties in addressing such sensitive issues. As the investigation continues, all eyes are on the West Bengal government’s response and the subsequent legal proceedings.
