In a notable shift from his previous stance, Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu has publicly acknowledged India as one of the country’s closest allies. This affirmation came during a ceremony at the President’s Office, where he inaugurated completed water supply and sewerage facilities across 28 islands in the Maldives. These projects were financed through India’s Line of Credit Facility via EXIM Bank of India.
Muizzu’s remarks signify a significant departure from his earlier “India Out” campaign, underscoring a newfound recognition of India’s invaluable support. At the ceremony, he emphasized the profound economic benefits these facilities will bring, including boosting local economies and overall national prosperity.
President Muizzu reiterated his administration’s commitment to strengthening the historic relationship between the Maldives and India. He expressed heartfelt gratitude towards Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Indian government, and the people of India for their ongoing and generous assistance.
Reflecting on his recent visit to India for Prime Minister Modi’s swearing-in ceremony, Muizzu conveyed his appreciation for the opportunity to meet both Modi and President Droupadi Murmu. He praised the High Impact Community Development Projects funded by Indian grants, describing them as a testament to the collaborative spirit between the two nations.
Muizzu also lauded the flexibility of the Indian government in restructuring the Line of Credit arrangement, which has been instrumental in accelerating project implementation. He noted the centuries-old bond between the Maldives and India, built on mutual respect and shared history.
Looking forward, Muizzu expressed optimism about the future of Maldives-India relations, anticipating continued growth and cooperation. He extended his thanks to External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, who is visiting the Maldives to further enhance bilateral ties.
This new chapter in the Maldives’ relationship with India highlights a deeper commitment to collaboration and mutual support, promising a stronger partnership in the years to come.
