Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu reassured that his commitment to a ‘Maldives First’ policy would not compromise India’s security interests. During his first bilateral visit to India, Muizzu emphasized, “We are confident that our engagements with other nations will not undermine India’s security interests.”
Known for his pro-China stance, Muizzu asserted that the Maldives will maintain strong and strategic relations with India, describing it as a “valued partner and friend.” He stated that the relationship is built on “mutual respect and shared interests.” Furthermore, he mentioned that Maldives and India now have a better understanding of each other’s priorities and concerns, which will further deepen bilateral ties.
Regarding the removal of Indian troops from the Maldives, President Muizzu defended his actions, asserting they aligned with the sentiments of most Maldivians. “The recent changes reflect our efforts to address domestic priorities,” he explained.
The Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) echoed these sentiments, highlighting that Muizzu’s visit, which began on Sunday, would significantly boost the “long-standing India-Maldives comprehensive bilateral partnership.”
This visit marks Muizzu’s first bilateral trip to India, although he attended Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s swearing-in ceremony in June. On Monday, he received a ceremonial welcome at Rashtrapati Bhavan, hosted by President Droupadi Murmu and PM Modi. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar expressed optimism regarding the discussions, expecting them to lend new impetus to friendly ties.
During this five-day visit, President Muizzu is expected to engage in discussions with PM Modi on various bilateral, regional, and international issues. This comes at a time when the Maldives is facing an economic crisis, and Muizzu is looking to India for financial aid, seeking a bailout package to stabilize the island nation’s economy.
