The Election Commission of India has announced the dates for assembly elections in Maharashtra and Jharkhand. Maharashtra will go to polls in a single phase on November 20, while Jharkhand will vote in two phases, on November 13 and 20. The results for both states will be declared on November 23.

In Maharashtra, the ruling Mahayuti alliance, consisting of Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and Ajit Pawar’s NCP, will face off against the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), which includes the Congress, Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena (UBT), and Sharad Pawar’s NCP.

In the 2019 Maharashtra Assembly elections, the BJP emerged as the largest party with 105 seats out of 288, while Shiv Sena secured 56 seats. However, due to disagreements over the Chief Minister’s post, the BJP-Shiv Sena alliance broke apart, and Shiv Sena formed the MVA government with the Congress and NCP.

In Jharkhand, the INDIA alliance, led by the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), Congress, and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), will take on the BJP, which aims to reclaim power. The JMM-led alliance had won 47 out of 81 seats in the 2019 elections, with JMM securing 30 seats, Congress winning 16, and the RJD winning 1. BJP had won 25 seats. However, Chief Minister Hemant Soren is now facing corruption charges, which may affect his standing.
