Aakhir Tak – In Depth
As the Maharashtra assembly elections approach, Congress is preparing for a significant reshuffle. According to party sources, at least 10 sitting MLAs are likely to be dropped from the upcoming polls due to widespread anti-incumbency sentiments. This decision follows an internal survey in which more than 20% of respondents expressed dissatisfaction with these legislators.
The Congress high command in Delhi has asked the party leadership in Maharashtra to weigh in on the consequences of sidelining these MLAs. To mitigate any dissent, the party plans to offer these lawmakers positions in the state’s Legislative Council (MLC), ensuring unity as the elections approach.
The reshuffle is part of Congress’s larger strategy to combat anti-incumbency and bring fresh faces to the forefront. The party has been in the opposition since the Maha Vikas Aghadi government collapsed. In the 2019 elections, Congress won 44 seats in the 288-member Maharashtra Assembly. For the upcoming elections, the party is aiming for around 100 seats in coalition talks with allies, Shiv Sena (UBT) and Sharad Pawar’s NCP.
However, consensus on seat-sharing remains elusive between Congress and Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena. Meanwhile, the Election Commission is set to announce the schedule for Assembly elections in Maharashtra and Jharkhand today, increasing political momentum in the state.
