The Maharashtra bandh, originally scheduled by the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) for Saturday, has been called off following a ruling by the Bombay High Court. The court’s decision came after it deemed the strike could lead to significant disruptions in essential services and cause substantial economic losses. The bandh was initially planned as a protest against the Mahayuti government’s handling of a distressing incident involving the sexual abuse of two kindergarten girls in Badlapur, Thane district.
A division bench comprising Chief Justice DK Upadhyaya and Justice Amit Borkar ruled that the bandh would paralyze normal life across the state, affecting not just businesses but also critical services such as healthcare. The court’s order emphasized the necessity of preventing such widespread disruptions.
In response, Shiv Sena (UBT) chief and former Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray expressed his disagreement with the court’s verdict but stated that the MVA would respect the judiciary’s decision. “We do not accept the High Court’s verdict, but we must respect it and withdraw the bandh. However, our protest will continue with black ribbons. If we are stopped from doing even this, we will seek legal recourse,” Thackeray said. He urged citizens to join the protest by gathering at key locations, tying black ribbons over their mouths, and holding black flags.
Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) President Sharad Pawar also called for the bandh to be withdrawn, citing the need to respect the judiciary. Pawar acknowledged the anger among the public regarding the Badlapur incident, stating that the bandh was intended to draw attention to the issue. Despite the cancellation of the bandh, Pawar stressed that the protest would continue in a peaceful manner.
Maharashtra Congress chief Nana Patole echoed these sentiments, announcing that MVA leaders and workers would continue their protest against the BJP-Shiv Sena-NCP government by displaying black flags and wearing black bands from 11 am to noon across the state.
