Kolkata Trainee Doctor Rape-Murder: CBI Questions Key Witnesses in RG Kar Hospital Case
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has intensified its probe into the tragic rape and murder of a trainee doctor at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. On Thursday, the CBI questioned three batchmates of the deceased doctor who were on duty on the night of the crime, according to reliable sources.
CBI’s Investigation and Interrogation
The investigation by the CBI is moving swiftly as they aim to uncover the truth behind the heinous crime. According to sources, the agency summoned at least eight doctors and other medical staff from the hospital, including the three trainee doctors, for detailed questioning.
On Thursday, chaos erupted at the hospital when a group of doctors surrounded the administrative building, preventing the principal and superintendent from leaving. The doctors demanded answers from the authorities regarding the vandalism that occurred at the hospital earlier that day.
Violence and Vandalism at RG Kar Medical College
The hospital premises were stormed late Wednesday night by a mob of nearly 40-50 people under the guise of protesting. The mob vandalized hospital property, leading to significant unrest. The police, caught off guard, were forced to fire tear gas and resort to lathicharge to disperse the violent crowd.
Kolkata Police later clarified that the crime scene where the trainee doctor was brutally raped and murdered had not been disturbed during the chaos. “The crime scene has not been touched. We will initiate legal action for spreading rumors,” police stated in a post on X (formerly Twitter).
Protests and Accusations of Negligence
The vandalism at the hospital has sparked widespread protests among the medical community. Nurses at the hospital also staged a protest on Thursday morning, condemning the attack. They alleged that the mob attempted to break into the seminar room where the crime occurred and that police officers sought refuge during the mob’s fury.
In a strongly worded statement, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) blamed the authorities for their negligence, stating that the mob attack was an attempt to intimidate young medical students who were protesting against the murder of their colleague. The IMA announced a 24-hour nationwide withdrawal of services by doctors starting from 6 AM on Saturday to protest the incident.
Political Reactions and Legal Actions
BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari has urged the Ministry of Home Affairs and the CBI to deploy Central Armed Paramilitary Forces (CAPF) at the hospital, citing the state government’s failure to maintain law and order. Adhikari accused the West Bengal government and Kolkata Police of allowing the situation to deteriorate, compromising evidence and threatening the safety of medical staff.
He also criticized the media for allegedly running a ‘malicious’ campaign that escalated the violence. Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal expressed concerns that such media coverage had contributed to the tense situation at the hospital.
CBI’s Next Steps
The CBI has continued its thorough investigation, questioning the principal of RG Kar Medical College, Surhita Paul, who was later taken to the agency’s CGO complex office for further interrogation. The probe team also examined the scene of the crime on the third floor of the Chest Medicine department to ensure it was secure from vandalism.
The semi-naked body of the 32-year-old trainee doctor was discovered on August 9 in the seminar hall of the government-run hospital. A civic volunteer associated with Kolkata Police, Sanjay Roy, has been arrested in connection with the crime.
As the investigation progresses, the CBI is expected to bring more individuals in for questioning and may reveal further details that could lead to justice for the victim.
