The family of the 31-year-old trainee doctor, who was brutally raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, shared the distressing details of their experience after being informed of their daughter’s death. Initially told that their daughter had died by suicide, the family was forced to wait outside the hospital for three agonizing hours before they were allowed to see her body.
Speaking to Lallantop, a sister channel of India Today TV, the victim’s father recalled the moment he received the devastating news. “When the hospital called, I knew something terrible had happened. My wife broke down, and they told us our daughter had died by suicide and that we should come immediately,” he recounted.
The father expressed the family’s deep sense of loss and their plea for justice, stating, “Our daughter cannot be returned to us, but we can at least seek justice for her.”
Hospital’s Initial Response
According to sources, the Assistant Superintendent of RG Kar Hospital’s Chest Medicine Wing was the first to inform the victim’s family of the incident, stating that she had died by suicide on hospital grounds.
A relative who accompanied the parents to the hospital described the mother’s overwhelming grief upon learning of her daughter’s death. “Her cries were heart-wrenching. She clung to me, saying everything was over and that the hospital had told her it was suicide,” the relative shared.
Three-Hour Wait Outside the Hospital
Upon arriving at the hospital, the family was made to wait outside for three hours before they could see the victim’s body. Despite their pleas to see their daughter, the hospital staff did not allow them inside immediately.
Eventually, the victim’s father was permitted to enter and take a photograph of his daughter’s body, which he later showed to the family. The relative described the horrific condition of the victim, stating, “She had no clothes on, her legs were apart at a 90-degree angle—a condition that would only occur if the pelvic girdle was broken, indicating she was brutally torn apart. Her glasses were shattered, and shards of glass were embedded in her eyes. She was choked to death, and this has been confirmed in the post-mortem.”
Autopsy Findings
The four-page autopsy report of the trainee doctor revealed she was strangled to death, as evidenced by a broken thyroid cartilage. The report also noted injuries to her belly, lips, fingers, and left leg, with bleeding from her eyes, mouth, and private parts. The injuries in her private areas were described as results of “perverted sexuality” and “genital torture.” However, the exact cause of the eye injuries remains undetermined.
In light of the gravity of the case, the Calcutta High Court transferred the investigation to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Tuesday.
