Kolkata Rape Protests Turn Violent: Mob Storms RG Kar Hospital, Police Use Tear Gas
In a shocking turn of events, protests against the recent rape and murder of a Kolkata doctor escalated into violence late Thursday night. The ‘Reclaim The Night’ protests, initially peaceful, took a violent turn as a large mob broke through police barricades outside the RG Kar hospital, creating chaos within the hospital premises.
The situation quickly spiraled out of control as the mob, angered by the incident and the perceived inaction of the authorities, stormed the hospital, vandalizing police vehicles and hospital property. The emergency ward, a critical area of the hospital, was not spared as protesters damaged equipment and other facilities within the building.
Despite the presence of law enforcement, the police were initially overwhelmed by the sheer number of protesters. The limited police force struggled to contain the situation, leading to extensive damage before reinforcements arrived.
To regain control, the police resorted to lathicharge and deployed tear gas shells, a measure that eventually dispersed the crowd but not before several injuries were reported. The incident highlights the escalating tensions in Kolkata over the tragic case, drawing attention to the city’s law and order situation.
The ‘Reclaim The Night’ movement, aimed at demanding justice and safety for women, has seen widespread participation across the city. However, the violence witnessed at RG Kar hospital is a stark reminder of the volatility surrounding such sensitive issues. As investigations continue, the city awaits further developments in both the rape case and the fallout from the violent protests.
