Kolkata Rape-Murder Case: Supreme Court to Take Decision on Missing Post-Mortem Document Today
The Supreme Court will continue hearing the suo motu case on the brutal rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital today. Protests in West Bengal continue, and the state government must update the court on security arrangements for doctors, details on the missing post-mortem document, and the arrangements for CISF personnel guarding the hospital.
Status Report by CBI: According to CBI lawyers, the agency will update the court on the progress of its investigation and inform the three-judge bench about the arrests of former RG Kar principal Dr. Sandip Ghosh and a senior police officer. The CBI alleges that they tampered with the crime scene, violated rules, and misled investigators. Dr. Ghosh has already been arrested for financial irregularities at the hospital.
Missing Post-Mortem Document: The West Bengal government will need to clarify whether the challan, a key document listing items sent for autopsy along with the body, was given to the doctor who conducted the post-mortem. In the last hearing, the Supreme Court raised concerns over the missing document. “Where is the challan? It is crucial because it will list what clothes and other items were seized by the police and sent to doctors for the post-mortem,” the Chief Justice remarked.
On Doctors’ Protests: The court is expected to address the ongoing protests by doctors who were asked to resume duties by September 10. Although the state government has agreed to most of their demands, including the removal of the Kolkata police chief, the protests continue. In the previous hearing, the court ordered the Bengal government to ensure the doctors’ safety, including the installation of CCTV cameras and the provision of restrooms and other infrastructure improvements.
Facilities for CISF: The state government will also update the court on arrangements made for the CISF personnel guarding RG Kar Hospital. The CISF had previously complained about inadequate accommodation and arrangements for female staff.
