The Kolkata rape-murder case involving the accused Sanjay Roy witnessed a dramatic turn of events as the court reprimanded the CBI for its lawyer’s delayed appearance. The case, which pertains to the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, has been under intense scrutiny since the arrest of Roy, a civic volunteer with Kolkata Police, on August 10.
Court Slams CBI Over Delay
The proceedings started at 4:20 pm, with defense lawyer Kavita Sarkar presenting her arguments. However, the judge quickly noticed the absence of CBI lawyer Dipak Poria, causing a 40-minute delay in the hearing. Expressing frustration, the magistrate questioned the CBI’s commitment, saying, “Shall I grant bail to Sanjay Roy? This reflects a severely lethargic attitude on the part of the CBI. It is very unfortunate.”
Bail Plea Rejected, Judicial Custody Extended
When Poria finally appeared, the court promptly dismissed the bail plea of Roy and ordered his remand to 14 days of judicial custody till September 20. The CBI also conducted a polygraph test on Roy at the Presidency Jail in August, as part of their investigation.
Financial Irregularities Probe
In addition to the murder case, the CBI registered a case of alleged financial irregularities at RG Kar Medical College, following the discovery of the trainee doctor’s body on August 9. Initially probed by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) formed by the West Bengal government, the case was transferred to the CBI by the Calcutta High Court after a plea by former Deputy Superintendent Akhtar Ali, who accused former principal Ghosh of financial misconduct.
The transfer of the investigation has added a layer of complexity to the already high-profile case, raising questions about the operations at RG Kar Medical College during Ghosh’s tenure. The case continues to unfold as the CBI intensifies its probe, and the legal battles proceed in the Kolkata courtrooms.
