Kolkata Rape-Murder: AIIMS Delhi Doctors Demand Action Amid Ongoing Strikes
Introduction In Kolkata, the tragic rape and murder of a 31-year-old woman trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital has led to widespread protests and strikes. This incident has prompted demands for justice and reform from medical professionals across the country.
Strikes and Protests Doctors and post-graduate students at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital have been on strike for four days, protesting the brutal attack on their colleague. The principal of the medical college, Dr. Sandip Ghosh, has resigned amid mounting pressure and criticism.
Demands from AIIMS Delhi The Resident Doctors’ Association (RDA) of Delhi’s AIIMS has outlined six key demands in response to the incident:
- CBI Inquiry: A thorough investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation.
- Action Against Culprits: Severe punishment for those responsible.
- Compensation: Adequate financial support for the victim’s family.
- Leadership Changes: Immediate removal of the RG Kar Medical College principal and security in-charge.
- Legislative Assurance: A written guarantee from the Central Government to enforce the Central Protection Act for doctors.
- Memorial: A building or library named in honor of the victim.
Details of the Crime The victim was discovered with severe injuries in a seminar hall at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. An autopsy revealed she had been raped before being murdered. The accused, a civic volunteer with no formal ties to the college, was arrested on August 10 and is currently in police custody.
Resignation of Medical College Principal Dr. Ghosh resigned, stating that the incident had tarnished his reputation on social media. He expressed his anguish, likening the victim to his own daughter and stating, “As a parent, I resign. This should not happen to anyone in the future.”
Impact on Patients and Services The ongoing strike has severely affected hospital operations. Outdoor centers at RG Kar Medical College have been closed, and while emergency services were initially maintained, they too have been suspended.
Chief Minister’s Response West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has vowed to pursue the death penalty for the accused and promised to transfer the case to the CBI if local police fail to resolve it by August 18.
Police Investigation and Public Advisory Kolkata Police are questioning several individuals, including doctors and housekeeping staff who were present on the night of the incident. They have cautioned against the spread of rumors, stressing that misinformation could hinder the investigation.
Strike Extends to Delhi In solidarity, doctors across ten government hospitals in Delhi have also gone on strike. The affected hospitals include RML, Maulana Azad Medical College, Lady Hardinge, and others. They are demanding a CBI probe and enhanced security for medical practitioners.
The tragic events in Kolkata have ignited a nationwide call for justice and systemic changes within medical institutions. The demands from AIIMS Delhi reflect a broader outcry from the medical community seeking accountability and reform.
