In a unique protest, junior doctors in Kolkata presented an artificial spine to the city’s Police Commissioner, Vineet Kumar Goyal. This symbolic act was a bold statement asking the police to “grow a backbone” in response to the mishandling of the rape and murder case of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Hospital on August 9, 2024. The spine, hand-made by the doctors, was placed prominently on the table during a meeting at the police headquarters, in front of Additional Commissioner Murlidhar Sharma.
The doctors, deeply angered by the incident, accused the police of negligence. They demanded the resignation of Commissioner Goyal, blaming his mishandling of the investigation before it was transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). On Monday, the doctors marched toward Lalbazar, carrying placards depicting Goyal and demanding accountability.
After hours of protesting, the police allowed the delegation to meet the commissioner. During the meeting, Goyal admitted to a lapse in the investigation. However, he refused to resign, stating that his performance was up to the state’s standards, and it was up to the authorities to decide his tenure. The junior doctors were dissatisfied with this response and vowed to continue their protests.
The doctors announced a statewide blackout on September 4, where lights will be turned off for an hour in memory of the deceased doctor. The protests aim to raise awareness about the negligence that led to the horrific incident, as the body of the young doctor was found in a seminar room at RG Kar Medical College. The movement reflects the frustration of the medical community and the demand for justice and accountability.
The Kolkata rape case has sparked outrage, with medical professionals standing in solidarity against what they see as a systemic failure. The junior doctors are determined to keep fighting until their voices are heard, and those responsible are held accountable.
