Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal Under Fire for Investigation in High-Profile Rape-Murder Case
Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal is facing intense scrutiny over the handling of the investigation into the tragic rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The case has sparked widespread outrage, leading to the Calcutta High Court’s decision to transfer the investigation to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), citing the lack of significant progress by the local police.
Mounting Criticism from Political Opposition
The opposition, particularly the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has raised serious concerns regarding the investigation. Senior BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari accused the Kolkata Police of mishandling the case, alleging that Commissioner Vineet Goyal was attempting to “botch up” the investigation. Adhikari’s statements have resonated with the public’s growing distrust in the police’s ability to deliver justice in this case.
In a public statement, Adhikari said, “Commissioner Vineet Goyal, your actions have led to the loss of public trust. The investigation has been mishandled, and the media is not to blame for the backlash.”
Allegations of a Malicious Media Campaign
In response to the criticism, Commissioner Goyal expressed his frustration, blaming a “malicious campaign” by the media for the public’s negative perception of the police’s efforts. He emphasized that the Kolkata Police had done everything within their power to solve the case and that the rumors circulating on social media were baseless.
However, the Commissioner acknowledged the pressure from the media and the public, stating, “We have done what is right. Now that the CBI is involved, we will fully support their investigation to ensure justice is served.”
Historical Parallels and Further Criticism
BJP IT cell chief Amit Malviya further intensified the criticism by drawing parallels between this case and a 2013 gang rape and murder case in Kamduni, in which Goyal, as the investigating officer, was accused of mishandling the investigation. Malviya suggested that the modus operandi in both cases showed similarities, casting further doubt on Goyal’s competence in leading such investigations.
Malviya’s claims were backed by a video from a recent Calcutta High Court hearing, where the petitioners’ counsel questioned Goyal’s role in the case, referencing his involvement in the 2013 Kamduni case.
Court’s Intervention and Transfer of Investigation
The Calcutta High Court’s decision to hand over the investigation to the CBI has been seen as a significant move, reflecting the judiciary’s lack of confidence in the police’s ability to manage the case effectively. The court’s order highlighted several discrepancies in the investigation and pointed out that the case was initially registered as an “unnatural death,” which raised concerns about the seriousness of the police’s approach.
The victim’s parents had long pleaded for an independent probe, and the court’s decision has brought a glimmer of hope to those seeking justice.
Who is Vineet Goyal?
Vineet Goyal, a 1994-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, has served in various capacities within the Kolkata Police and the state police force. An alumnus of IIT Kharagpur, Goyal’s career has seen him rise through the ranks, holding key positions, including the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) and Additional Commissioner of Police.
Goyal’s tenure as the Commissioner of Kolkata Police began on January 1, 2022, succeeding Soumen Mitra. However, recent controversies, including the Union Home Ministry’s disciplinary action against him and another senior officer for allegedly violating protocol, have marred his reputation.
