West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has accused workers of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of being responsible for the recent vandalism at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The incident occurred during protests over the rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor, and Banerjee claims the perpetrators were “outsiders” who carried flags representing the Left and BJP.
Mamata Banerjee’s Allegations
Addressing the media after a meeting with the Governor, Mamata Banerjee alleged that the individuals involved in the hospital’s vandalism were not students but political operatives. “I have received information that outsiders, particularly workers from ‘Baam and Ram’ (Left and BJP), were involved in this. The students had no role in it,” Banerjee stated. She further condemned the incident and announced plans to hold a rally demanding the death penalty for the accused in the trainee doctor’s rape and murder.
Political Conspiracy Claims
Mamata Banerjee reiterated her longstanding accusations against the Left and BJP, claiming they are conspiring to destabilize her government. “I saw flags of the Left and BJP. The way they attacked the police was alarming,” she said. The Chief Minister also recounted how a police officer-in-charge was unaccounted for an hour during the chaos, only to be found injured later.
Impact on Patients
The vandalism forced patients to leave the hospital without receiving treatment, with some reportedly returning to their villages. Banerjee expressed concern over the damage caused, including looted medicines and destroyed infrastructure. “Several patients have left without getting treated. I have also learned that a few have died,” she said, adding that some senior doctors were still providing services despite the situation.
Social Media Concerns
Banerjee criticized certain individuals for using social media to spread false information and sensationalize the trainee doctor’s murder for personal gain. “The Left and BJP are attempting to tarnish Bengal’s image. Some are using social media to increase their followers by spreading false narratives,” she claimed, instructing the police to monitor such activities.
The Protests and Vandalism Incident
The violence erupted during the ‘Reclaim the Night’ protest, a movement demanding justice for the murdered trainee doctor. While most of the protests were peaceful, the situation at RG Kar Medical College escalated when a mob forcibly entered the hospital premises. Visuals from the scene showed the mob vandalizing the emergency ward and damaging police vehicles parked outside.
Police Response
According to police reports, a group of 40–50 people disguised as protesters stormed the hospital and caused significant damage. The police responded with tear gas and a lathi charge to disperse the mob.
BJP’s Reaction
The BJP has demanded Mamata Banerjee’s resignation over the incident. In a statement posted on X, the BJP accused the state government of failing to protect citizens and claimed the police were conspicuously absent during the vandalism. “Where was Kolkata Police during this brutal assault? Hiding in the shadows, only to emerge after the damage was done,” the BJP’s post read.
Suvendu Adhikari’s Allegations
Senior BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari accused the Trinamool Congress (TMC) of orchestrating the vandalism to derail the Central Bureau of Investigation’s (CBI) probe into the trainee doctor’s rape and murder. He alleged that the TMC was attempting to cover up its failures by shifting the blame onto opposition parties.
The vandalism at RG Kar Medical College has sparked a political firestorm in West Bengal, with the ruling TMC and opposition BJP trading blame. As investigations continue, the focus remains on ensuring justice for the trainee doctor and preventing further violence.
