Ragpicker Injured in Kolkata Explosion, Bomb Squad and Police Investigating
A 54-year-old ragpicker was injured in an explosion at the intersection of Blochmann Street and SN Banerjee Road in central Kolkata. The incident occurred around 1:45 PM today, leading to immediate action from law enforcement.
Officials from the Taltala Police Station arrived at the scene and cordoned off the area, identifying a suspicious plastic gunny bag. The Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS) was called in to thoroughly investigate the bag and surrounding area. After clearance from the BDDS, traffic resumed in the vicinity.
The injured individual, identified as Bapi Das, was rushed to NRS Medical College and Hospital for treatment. Due to his critical condition, his statement has not yet been recorded, according to an official source.
Reacting to the explosion, Bengal BJP leader and Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar called for a National Investigation Agency (NIA) probe into the incident. “The explosion is concerning and needs thorough investigation. I believe the NIA should step in, as the local police might lack the expertise required for such incidents,” Majumdar said.
He also criticized West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, saying that the incident highlights her failure to maintain law and order in the state. “If this is the state of law and order, the Home Minister should resign,” he added.
Forensic teams are currently on-site, working to determine the cause and nature of the explosion. Further details will emerge as the investigation continues.
