The horrific rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital have sent shockwaves throughout the nation, leading to widespread protests by the medical community. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has now stepped in to conduct a psychological assessment of Sanjay Roy, the accused in this brutal crime.
Nationwide Medical Strike
In response to the gruesome incident, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) announced a 24-hour nationwide strike, demanding justice for the victim and the implementation of stringent laws to protect healthcare workers. Essential services remained operational, but Out Patient Departments (OPD) were shut down across the country, causing significant disruptions.
Madhya Pradesh High Court directed striking doctors to resume work immediately, while Maharashtra’s Chief Minister, Eknath Shinde, discussed with Union Minister JP Nadda the need for a Central Protection Act to safeguard doctors.
CBI Steps In
The CBI’s decision to conduct a psychological assessment of the accused, Sanjay Roy, indicates the seriousness of the case. A team of experts from the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) in Delhi has been dispatched to Kolkata to carry out the necessary evaluations. This move comes as the CBI takes Roy into custody for further investigation.
Political Reactions and Legal Actions
BJP leader Sajal Ghosh, known for his role in organizing the popular Santosh Mitra Square Puja, urged Durga Puja committees across West Bengal to reject the state government’s honorarium in protest against what he termed as the government’s failure to ensure women’s safety.
Meanwhile, a petition has been filed before the Supreme Court, urging it to take suo motu cognizance of the incident. The petition highlights the need for immediate judicial intervention to ensure justice is served.
Government Criticism
Union Women and Child Development Minister Annapurna Devi strongly criticized West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, accusing her of mishandling the case and alleging that the police, in collusion with “TMC goons,” were attempting to destroy evidence.
As the investigation continues, the nation watches closely, demanding justice for the young doctor and stricter laws to prevent such atrocities in the future.
