The family of a Kolkata doctor who was raped and murdered at a state-run hospital has accused the West Bengal police of attempting to cover up the case. They claim that the police hastily cremated the doctor’s body and even attempted to bribe the family to suppress the matter.
The shocking incident took place on August 9 at RG Kar Hospital, where the 32-year-old trainee doctor was working. According to her father, the police prevented the family from seeing the body immediately and kept them waiting at the police station during the post-mortem examination. Upon receiving the body, a senior police official allegedly offered the family money, which they refused outright.
Initially, the Kolkata Police were responsible for investigating the case, but the Calcutta High Court ordered a transfer of the investigation to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), considering the gravity of the allegations against local authorities.
The incident sparked outrage across Kolkata and other parts of West Bengal, leading to mass protests demanding justice. On Wednesday night, thousands of women took to the streets as part of the ‘Reclaim the Night’ campaign. The movement, aimed at demanding safety and accountability, saw participation from the doctor’s parents, who joined junior doctors in their fight for justice.
The protest wave also influenced the legislative landscape. The West Bengal Assembly recently passed an anti-rape bill that seeks the death penalty for rape convicts if the victim dies or is left in a vegetative state. The bill also proposes a life sentence without parole for other serious offenders, marking a significant shift in the state’s legal response to such crimes.
In a parallel development, the CBI arrested Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, over allegations of financial misconduct. Junior doctors have long accused the hospital administration of ignoring their repeated pleas for improved security measures, pointing to a lack of basic protections that contributed to the tragic events.
This case has not only exposed severe lapses in law enforcement but has also highlighted the urgent need for systemic reforms in the healthcare sector to ensure the safety and security of medical professionals.
