The tragic rape and murder of a post-graduate trainee doctor in Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9 have shocked the entire nation. The gruesome details of the crime were unveiled through the post-mortem report, which was recently handed over to the victim’s family by the Kolkata Police.
According to the autopsy report, the young doctor was not only sexually assaulted but also met a brutal end through throttling and smothering. The report confirmed that she was raped before being killed, leaving the country in disbelief at the inhumanity of the act.
The post-mortem, which categorized the death as homicidal and ante-mortem, established that the victim was already dead before her body was discovered. The estimated time of death was between 3 AM and 5 AM, further underscoring the horror of the crime committed in the early hours of the day.
The four-page report laid bare the severe physical trauma the victim endured. She had sustained multiple injuries, including bleeding from her private parts and various marks of assault on her body. Her face bore injuries, with signs of bleeding from both her eyes and mouth. The report also indicated that there were injuries on her belly, left leg, neck, right hand, and lips, reflecting the extent of the violence inflicted upon her.
One individual, a civic volunteer, has been arrested in connection with the case. The police have accused him of both the rape and murder of the doctor. Shockingly, after committing the crime, the accused reportedly returned to his home, slept until late the next morning, and then attempted to destroy evidence by washing his clothes.
This incident has ignited a wave of nationwide protests, with the medical community demanding justice for the victim and her grieving family. The severity of the crime has placed immense pressure on the authorities to act swiftly and decisively.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, in a strong statement, warned the Kolkata Police of severe consequences if they fail to resolve the case by Sunday, August 18. She has indicated that if the investigation does not yield results, the case will be transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
The horrifying details of this case serve as a grim reminder of the need for stringent measures to protect women and ensure that justice is served in the most brutal crimes. The nation watches closely as the investigation unfolds, hoping for swift justice for the young doctor whose life was tragically cut short.
