The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has submitted its status report on the investigation into the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital to the Supreme Court. This submission comes ahead of a scheduled hearing today.
A bench led by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, along with Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Mishra, reviewed the case on August 20. The court had requested status reports from both the CBI and the Bengal government on the investigation into the rape-murder and the vandalism at RG Kar hospital.
Reports confirm that both the CBI’s and the Bengal government’s updates have been filed with the Supreme Court. The Bengal government’s legal team comprises 21 lawyers, while the Centre is represented by five advocates.
The horrific rape and murder of the 31-year-old postgraduate doctor have triggered widespread outrage and protests across the nation. During the hearing, the Supreme Court criticized the Bengal government for its mishandling of the case and its failure to prevent vandalism at the medical college. The Bengal government is also expected to submit a report today on the progress of the investigation into the vandalism.
Earlier, on August 13, the Calcutta High Court transferred the investigation of the rape-murder case to the CBI, citing “serious lapses” by the RG Kar hospital administration.
The Bengal government’s legal representation includes prominent lawyers such as Kapil Sibal, Menaka Guruswamy, and Sanjay Basu. On the Centre’s side, the legal team is led by Solicitor General Tushar Mehta.
The Supreme Court had previously criticized RG Kar Medical College and Hospital for delays in filing the First Information Report (FIR) and the handling of the victim’s body. Chief Justice Chandrachud expressed concerns over the media’s circulation of the victim’s personal details and stressed that the safety of women doctors is a critical issue.
Additionally, the court established a ten-member National Task Force (NTF) to recommend safe working conditions for healthcare professionals. The Federation of All India Medical Associations (FAIMA) and the National Federation of Resident Doctors of AIIMS have also approached the Supreme Court, seeking interim protection and security measures for doctors until the NTF’s recommendations are implemented.
