Aakhir Tak – In Depth
A horrific ragging incident has come to light at a nursing college in the Kottayam district of Kerala. Following a formal police complaint, five students have been arrested and are facing charges related to violent acts of ragging. This Kerala college ragging case has shocked the community.
The arrested students, identified as Samuel Johnson, NS Jeeva, KP Rahul Raj, C Rijil Jith, and Vivek NP, are third-year students at the Government College of Nursing in Kottayam. They are accused of brutally ragging their juniors.
According to police reports, the group had been harassing first-year nursing students in the name of ragging since November 2024. After enduring months of abuse, three first-year students filed a complaint at the Gandhinagar police station. The problem of ragging in Kerala is a serious concern.
The police stated that the complaint included a detailed account of the violent acts of harassment committed by the accused.
The accused reportedly made cuts on the bodies of their juniors and then poured lotion over these cuts. When the victims cried out in pain, the perpetrators would apply cream on their mouths and other body parts. The accused students showed extreme cruelty.
The complaint further alleged that the students were stripped naked and dumbbells were hung from their private parts. The accused also used stationery instruments, including compasses, to inflict injuries on the victims.
In response to the incident, all five students implicated in the ragging have been suspended by the college. The college principal initiated action after conducting an investigation under the Anti-Ragging Act.
Dr. Lini Joseph, the Principal-in-charge, stated that the students did not report the ragging to the college. “The parents called the class teacher to inform them about it. After receiving the complaint, a preliminary inspection was conducted, and action was taken. A committee will be appointed today (February 12) for a detailed investigation. Decisions on further action against the students will be taken after that,” she said. The college administration is taking stringent measures against ragging. The incident has raised questions about the effectiveness of anti-ragging measures.
