The much-anticipated release of Kangana Ranaut’s directorial debut, “Emergency,” has been postponed, sparking widespread controversy and speculation. Sources close to Kangana’s team confirmed that the Mandi Lok Sabha MP is working diligently to ensure the film is released within the next 10 days. The primary reason for the delay is complications with the censor board and recent death threats received by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) members.
Kangana recently addressed the issue on her official social media handle, stating, “There are rumours circulating that our film Emergency has received a censor certificate, but this is not the case. While the film had initially been cleared, certification has been halted due to numerous threats, including death threats directed at the Censor Board members.”
The biographical political drama portrays the turbulent period of India’s Emergency in the 1970s, highlighting controversial figures such as former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and Sikh leader Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale. In the film’s trailer, Bhindranwale is depicted as a manipulative figure, which has caused significant backlash from the Sikh community. The Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) has called for a ban, alleging that the film misrepresents Sikhs and could incite communal discord.
Amid the ongoing controversy, Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy has promised Sikh community leaders that the state will consider legal steps to ban the film’s release locally. Despite these setbacks, Kangana remains hopeful, expressing her determination to overcome the challenges and release “Emergency” soon.
The situation underscores the complexities of creative expression in politically charged content and the sensitive nature of India’s historical narratives portrayed in cinema.
