Aakhir Tak – In Depth
Kangana Ranaut’s highly anticipated film Emergency has cleared its final hurdle as it received certification from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). The actress shared this news on X (formerly Twitter) on October 17, expressing gratitude to her supporters and excitement for the upcoming release announcement. The film, which was delayed due to censor board concerns, has been the subject of much anticipation, particularly due to its controversial theme surrounding India’s political Emergency of 1975-1977.
The CBFC initially raised concerns, recommending around 13 changes to the movie before granting it a U/A certification. These modifications included the removal of violent scenes and a sensitive reference to Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, a Sikh leader, as “saint or sant.” This particular point led to protests from Sikh groups who claimed the film portrayed their community negatively. As a result, the makers decided to comply with the censor board’s recommendations to avoid further conflict.
In a court case with Zee Studios, the Bombay High Court learned that the production company had agreed to make all necessary changes to receive certification. After completing the revisions, the film has been passed for theatrical release, and the team will announce the exact date soon, likely after the upcoming Punjab elections in November. The move to delay the release is seen as a strategic step to ensure a smooth debut without political or social tension.
The film was originally slated for a September 6 release but has been postponed. Emergency dives deep into the political and social turmoil of the Emergency period in India. Kangana Ranaut not only directs the film but also portrays former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, leading a talented ensemble cast that includes Anupam Kher, Shreyas Talpade, Milind Soman, Mahima Chaudhry, and the late Satish Kaushik.
The film’s story revolves around this critical period in India’s history, marking a dark chapter when civil liberties were curtailed, media censorship was enforced, and political opponents were jailed. With its strong historical subject matter, Emergency has attracted attention from various quarters, eager to see how this controversial period is depicted on the big screen.
