Trudeau and Modi Discuss Strained Relations Amid Khalistani Allegations
During a summit in Laos, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had a brief exchange with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Following the meeting, Trudeau told reporters that he spoke to Modi about “the work we need to do,” reflecting the ongoing tensions between the two nations after Trudeau accused New Delhi of involvement in the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.
“I emphasized that there are issues we need to address,” Trudeau said, while declining to provide specific details of the conversation. He reiterated that the safety of Canadians and upholding the rule of law are fundamental responsibilities for any Canadian government. Trudeau also highlighted the importance of continuing to strengthen trade and people-to-people ties with India, but noted, “there are real issues we need to solve.”
Hardeep Singh Nijjar, leader of the Khalistan Tiger Force and wanted by the Indian government, was killed in a targeted shooting in Surrey, Canada, in June 2023. Trudeau’s subsequent claim of “credible allegations” regarding Indian agents’ involvement in the murder led to heightened tensions. India dismissed these charges as “absurd” and “motivated.”
Following Canada’s allegations, the United States also reported it was investigating a similar assassination plot linked to India, involving Khalistani terrorist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun. In November 2023, a US court summoned Indian officials, including National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, in connection with the Pannun case.
