Joe Biden Quits US Presidential Race: ‘In Best Interest of Party, Country’
In a significant political development, Joe Biden has ended his re-election bid. This decision comes amid mounting pressure from within his own party. Many Democrats had begun to question his mental acuity and his ability to compete against Donald Trump. Biden, at 81, announced his withdrawal from the race, stating that it is in the best interest of both his party and the country.
The Announcement
On Saturday, Biden made his decision public. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), he expressed his intention to focus solely on his duties as President and Commander-in-Chief until the end of his term in January 2025. He said, “It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your President. And while it has been my intention to seek re-election, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term.”
Support for Kamala Harris
Following his announcement, Biden extended his support to Vice President Kamala Harris. He endorsed her to run at the top of the ticket. If Harris accepts and wins, she would be the first Indian-origin Black woman to run as a US presidential candidate. Biden stated, “My very first decision as the party nominee in 2020 was to pick Kamala Harris as my Vice President. And it’s been the best decision I’ve made. Today I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee of our party this year. Democrats — it’s time to come together and beat Trump. Let’s do this.”
Reasons Behind Biden’s Decision
Biden’s decision comes four months before the presidential election scheduled for November 5. The decision follows significant pressure from Democratic lawmakers and party officials. Many were concerned after his underwhelming performance in a debate against Donald Trump last month.
Reaction from Donald Trump
In response to Biden’s announcement, Republican candidate Donald Trump told CNN that he believes Kamala Harris will be easier to defeat in the upcoming election than Joe Biden.
Impact on the Democratic Party
Biden’s withdrawal from the race has left the Democratic Party in a state of flux. With Harris potentially stepping up as the presidential candidate, the party must now rally behind her. This move could redefine the dynamics of the election, providing a fresh face for the party to rally behind.
