Aakhir Tak – In Depth
JD Vance, a Catholic and Republican Vice Presidential nominee, recently stated in an interview with The New York Times that he “feels bad” for bringing his Hindu wife, Usha, to Sunday Mass weekly. Although Usha, raised in a religious household, has not converted to Catholicism, she has attended Mass with him regularly and has been supportive of his Christian faith.
Vance shared, “Usha thought that it was good for me, in a sort of good-for-your-soul kind of way.” He reflected on how becoming a father between 2017 and 2019 prompted him to question his life’s direction. At that time, he felt the “values of meritocracy” were significantly lacking.
Raised Protestant, Vance began considering converting to Catholicism in 2016, encouraged by Usha. He admitted, “I don’t think I would have ever done it without her support.” Usha, a litigator at a law firm known for its progressive stance, has remained supportive of Vance, even amidst criticism for his “anti-woke” remarks.
The couple has three children: Ewan (6), Vivek (4), and Mirabel (2). Usha previously mentioned that her parents’ Hindu faith made them “good parents and really good people,” which further helped her support JD’s spiritual journey.
