The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced a 15-member squad on October 11 for the upcoming three-match Test series against New Zealand. This series is set to begin on October 17 at M.Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru. Speedster Jasprit Bumrah has been appointed as the vice-captain of the Test team due to his stellar performances in recent years.
Notably, Bumrah finished as the joint-highest wicket-taker in the recent series against Bangladesh, taking 11 wickets. His impressive performance has earned him the top spot in the ICC Test bowling rankings. Since his return to the Indian team in August 2023, Bumrah has taken 42 wickets in Tests, boasting an outstanding average of 14.69.
With the vice-captaincy, Bumrah is expected to play a more proactive role in the team’s on-field strategy. However, he is likely to be rested for at least one Test against New Zealand ahead of the crucial five-match Test series in Australia.
Additionally, fast bowler Mohammed Shami is still recovering from an ankle injury and is expected to play some matches in the Ranji Trophy before returning to the team. Players who did not participate in the Bangladesh series, such as Dhruv Jurel and Sarfaraz Khan, might be given opportunities to keep them match-ready for the Australia series.
