Aakhir Tak – In Depth
The diplomatic strain between Canada and India has intensified once again. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar criticized the Canadian government’s labeling of High Commissioner Sanjay Verma and other diplomats as ‘persons of interest.’ Speaking at an event in Pune, Jaishankar emphasized India’s commitment to sovereignty and called for a more “sensible, sober, and responsible” approach from Canadian authorities.
Jaishankar stated, “The manner in which the Canadian government targeted our High Commissioner and diplomats is completely unacceptable.” India has previously voiced concerns over organized crime in Canada, which, according to Jaishankar, went unaddressed due to what he described as a “permissive atmosphere for a long time.”
In response, India recalled Verma and five other diplomats, while also expelling six Canadian diplomats from New Delhi. This action led Ottawa to hint at potential sanctions, which Jaishankar dismissed as baseless and damaging.
Jaishankar noted that a “small minority” has gained disproportionate political voice in Canada, which he argued negatively impacts both nations. Additionally, he highlighted India’s role in international diplomacy and neutrality, especially in the context of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, showcasing India’s capability to balance relations between global powers.
