Kangana Ranaut Apologizes for Farm Laws Remark, Faces BJP Criticism
Lok Sabha MP and Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut once again sparked controversy after suggesting that the three farm reform laws, which were repealed after widespread farmer protests, should be reinstated. Following sharp criticism from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Kangana issued a public apology, stating, “I take my words back.”
On Tuesday, the BJP distanced itself from her remarks and clarified that Kangana is “not authorized” to make such statements on behalf of the party. In a video message, BJP spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia said the comments were Kangana’s “personal statement” and did not reflect the party’s official stance on the farm bills.
Facing backlash from the party, Kangana expressed regret, saying, “My remark has disappointed many people.” She further added, “I need to remind myself that I am no longer just an actor but a politician too, and my opinions should not be personal but reflective of the party.”
Kangana acknowledged the initial support the farm laws received but emphasized the need to respect Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s decision to repeal them. “If I have hurt anyone with my views and words, I apologize for that. I take my words back,” she said, highlighting the collective responsibility of BJP members to support the Prime Minister’s decisions.
Earlier in the day, Kangana took to social media platform X to clarify the personal nature of her views. She posted, “Absolutely, my views on Farmers Laws are personal, and they don’t represent the party’s stance on those Bills. Thanks.”
The controversy started earlier on Tuesday when, during an interview, Kangana remarked, “I know this statement could be controversial, but the three farm laws should be brought back. The farmers should demand it themselves.”
She argued that the three laws were beneficial for farmers but were repealed by the Centre due to protests by various farmer groups in some states. “Farmers are a pillar of strength for the nation’s development. I appeal to them to demand the laws back for their own good,” she added.
Notably, this isn’t the first time the BJP has distanced itself from Kangana’s statements. Last month, the party urged the actress-turned-politician to exercise restraint after she compared the farmers’ protests to a “Bangladesh-like situation in India.” She also alleged that dead bodies were found hanging and that rapes were occurring at protest sites, comments that drew sharp criticism from both the BJP and the Opposition.
