Israel Targets North Lebanon, Kills Hamas Leader in Fresh Airstrikes

Israeli military operations intensified in northern Lebanon on Saturday, with a major airstrike hitting the city of Tripoli. Saeed Atallah, a leader of Hamas’ military wing, the al-Qassam Brigades, was killed in the attack alongside three family members. The Israeli military urged residents to evacuate immediately after the airstrike.

The ongoing strikes, primarily targeting Hezbollah, have also hit areas near Beirut and southern Lebanon, including the city of Khiam. Explosions were reported near Beirut’s airport as well.

Hamas Leader Killed:
Saeed Atallah, a senior Hamas leader, was confirmed dead in the airstrikes in northern Lebanon. He was located in a Palestinian refugee camp in Tripoli, where he and his family were killed. No official comment was made by the Israeli army.

Clashes in Southern Lebanon:
Hezbollah reported that Israeli forces were attempting to breach the southern Lebanese town of Odaisseh. Artillery shelling continued in the southern cities of Khiam and Kafr Kila. There has been no confirmation of the fate of Hezbollah’s potential next leader, Hashem Safieddine, who was allegedly targeted in an Israeli strike on Thursday night.

International Response:
US President Joe Biden commented on the ongoing crisis, indicating that Israel has not yet decided on a response to Iran’s missile strike earlier this week. He urged consideration of alternative responses, noting his administration’s strong support for Israel.

Meanwhile, the US military launched airstrikes on Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen, in collaboration with British forces. The strikes targeted military sites, including airports.

Humanitarian Aid:
The United States has announced $157 million in new humanitarian aid to support civilians affected by the conflict in Lebanon and surrounding regions. The aid will focus on displaced persons, refugee populations, and local communities hosting refugees.
