Israel Removes Map Incorrectly Depicting Jammu and Kashmir
Israel took down a map of India that incorrectly depicted Jammu and Kashmir as part of Pakistan on its official website, following significant backlash on social media. Reuven Azar, the Israeli ambassador to India, stated that the removal was due to an editor’s mistake.
The issue was initially raised by a user on X (formerly Twitter), who wrote, “India stands with Israel. But does Israel stand with India? Note the map of India (pay attention to Jammu and Kashmir) on Israel’s official website.” In response, Azar acknowledged, “Website editor’s mistake. Thank you for noticing. Was taken down.”
India has consistently maintained that the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir will always remain an integral and inalienable part of India.
This development comes as Israel is engaged in a multi-front war in the Middle East after the killing of the secretive Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah last week. Over 1,000 people have been killed and more than a million displaced as Israel has shifted its focus from Gaza to Lebanon, attacking Hezbollah strongholds.
The crisis escalated after Iran launched a barrage of 200 missiles towards Israel on Tuesday, prompting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to threaten retaliatory strikes.
Recently, while addressing the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), Netanyahu displayed two maps showing countries categorized as “The Curse” and “The Blessing.” Iran, Iraq, Syria, and Yemen were shown in black as “The Curse,” while Egypt, Sudan, Saudi Arabia, and India were painted in green as “The Blessing.”
Interestingly, both maps depicted Palestinian territories—the West Bank and Gaza—as part of Israel. The Golan Heights region in Syria was also shown as being part of Israel.
