Israel’s Missile Defense System: Effective Response to Iran’s Attack
Recently, Israel effectively responded to an attack involving over 200 ballistic missiles. During this attack, Israel showcased its multi-layered defense system, including the Iron Dome, David’s Sling, and Arrow 2 and 3 systems. This system demonstrated its capability to neutralize long-range, high-speed projectiles.
Iron Dome: This is Israel’s most recognized defense system, responsible for intercepting short-range, unguided rockets typically fired by Hezbollah and Hamas. However, it was not fully effective during the attack on October 7, 2023. Retired Major General Ashok Kumar explained that the system was briefly overwhelmed due to peacetime procedures and the sheer number of targets.
David’s Sling: This system is designed to intercept ballistic missiles at ranges of 25 to 186 miles. It utilizes “hit-to-kill” technology, which neutralizes missiles through direct impact.
Arrow 2 and Arrow 3: These systems handle even longer-range ballistic missiles, including intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs). Arrow 2 detonates near an incoming missile, while Arrow 3 also uses direct impact to destroy threats in space.
Expert Insights
Experts believe that Israel’s missile defense system effectively neutralized most of the Iranian threat. Major General Kumar noted that Israel received assistance from the US and UK, which helped intercept the Iranian missile threat.
Currently, the increasing use of supersonic missiles poses future challenges. These missiles fly at higher speeds, complicating detection and neutralization efforts. Maintaining Israel’s security will require continuous upgrades and adaptations.
