In a significant development amid escalating tensions in the Middle East, Israel and Lebanon have decided to hold off on further military actions for the time being. However, both nations have issued warnings about the potential for future strikes. The decision comes after one of the most intense exchanges in over 10 months of conflict, with both sides launching missiles and rockets in a bid to assert dominance in the volatile region.
On Sunday, the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) launched a major offensive, targeting dozens of so-called “terror targets” in Lebanon using approximately 100 fighter jets. This attack was labeled a defensive measure by Israel. In response, Hezbollah, the powerful Lebanese militant group, fired over 320 Katyusha rockets into Israeli territory, raising fears of a broader conflict.
Hezbollah’s leader, Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, stated that the rocket barrage was a retaliation for the recent killing of senior commander Fuad Shukr by Israeli forces. Nasrallah emphasized that while Hezbollah’s response was “planned,” the group would evaluate the impact of the strikes and could retaliate again if deemed necessary.
The cross-border violence resulted in four deaths, including three in Lebanon and one in Israel. Despite the intense exchanges, both Israeli and Lebanese officials have indicated that they are not seeking a full-scale war. Israel’s Foreign Minister, Israel Katz, reiterated that his country does not want to escalate the conflict. However, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu hinted at future actions, stating, “This is not the end of the story.”
Diplomatic efforts appear to be in motion, with two diplomats revealing that both Israel and Lebanon have exchanged messages to prevent further escalation. The conflict has already seen severe casualties, including a missile strike in Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, which killed 12 people, and the subsequent killing of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh by Israeli forces.
The situation remains tense, with the United States closely monitoring the developments. While the US has clarified that it was not involved in Sunday’s strikes, it has expressed support for Israel’s right to defend itself. US General CQ Brown, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, arrived in Israel as part of efforts to prevent further escalation.
Meanwhile, regional powers, including Egypt and Jordan, have expressed concerns over the potential for a broader conflict. Both countries have been involved in ceasefire talks aimed at ending the ongoing war in Gaza, which has claimed over 40,000 lives since October 7 of last year.
As Israel and Lebanon remain on high alert, the possibility of future strikes looms large, keeping the Middle East on edge.
